Create and manage communities

When you create a community, you become its administrator and manage that space. You set visibility and join requirements, approve member requests, and manage posts within the space.

  1. From the header create menu, choose Community.
  2. Enter required information such as the community name and create the community.

When creating a community, choose join requirements to define how members join.

SettingMeaning
Anyone can joinNo administrator approval is required. Eligible users become members immediately.
Administrator approvalPeople who want to join submit a request, and only those approved by an administrator become members.

For private communities, administrator approval is required to join (automatic join is not available).

You can change join requirements after creation from community settings. If visibility is set to Private, join requirements automatically become “Administrator approval”.

  • Changing from Public to Private is allowed only within 30 days of creation.
  • Changing from Private to Public is not allowed. Choose carefully when creating the community.

When join requests arrive, you can approve, decline, or remove them. From the member list, you can change roles, remove problematic members, or block them (see Stay safe). These actions are performed mainly by administrators.

Communities have the following roles:

A role for operating the entire space, such as the community creator.

  • In addition to what Administrators and Moderators can do: change community name, description, visibility, and join requirements
  • Approve or decline join requests, change member roles, remove members, and block members
  • Manage the entire space, including deleting the community

Administrators cannot change their own role or remove other administrators.

A role for members you trust to organize posts and help with moderation. In addition to what Contributors can do, they can manage posts, including deleting other members’ posts.

The standard role for members who participate and post in the community.

  • Post stories to the note
  • Comment and react on other members’ posts within what they can view
