Stay safe

If you encounter unpleasant posts or unwanted users, you can protect yourself with reports, blocks, and mutes. Rules for interaction are defined in the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

  • Report … Tell the service team about content that may violate the rules
  • Block … Strongly cut off interaction (including removing friends or leaving communities)
  • Mute … Hide posts from a specific user or community only in your news feed (such as Home)

Reporting lets you tell the service team about content or behavior that appears to violate the Terms of Service or Community Guidelines so it can be reviewed. You can submit a report from the Report menu on posts, chat messages, user or community spaces, and similar screens.

Consider reporting with an appropriate reason in cases such as:

  • Spam … Repeated identical posts, advertising, solicitation, and similar behavior
  • Harassment or defamation … Aggressive or threatening behavior toward a specific person
  • Inappropriate content … Violent, sexual, or discriminatory expression that may upset viewers
  • Intellectual property infringement … Content that appears to infringe copyright, trademarks, or similar rights
  • Other … Situations not covered above that you believe require review by the service team

Do not use reporting for mere disagreements or content you simply dislike. Choose the reason that best fits and submit based on facts.

  1. Choose Report from a post detail view, feed, chat, space menu, or similar.
  2. Select a reason in the dialog and submit.
  3. You can report each target only once. If you have already reported it, the button is disabled or shows “Reported”.

The service team reviews reports and may take moderation action when needed, such as removing content, issuing warnings, applying sensitive settings, or suspending accounts. Not every report results in action (some may be declined after review).

If action is taken based on a report, a summary may appear in your notifications. If no action is taken or a report is declined, you may not receive an individual outcome notice. There is no system for detailed individual follow-up by chat or email.

Neither action notifies the other party. Choose based on your goal.

What mute applies to (users and communities)

Section titled “What mute applies to (users and communities)”

Mute hides posts to a specific space from your news feed.

ActionPosts hidden from your feed
Mute a userPosts to that person’s my space
Mute a communityPosts to that community space (regardless of who posted)

Muting a user does not hide posts that the same person writes in communities.

When you block a user or community, the other party cannot view your detailed information (profile, posts, member information, and so on), and your access to their detailed information is also restricted.

To block someone, use the block action from that user’s space or community space.

You can also review users and community spaces you have blocked and unblock them. Blocked users and communities can be reviewed from the Security & privacy tab in account settings.

Posts to a specific user or community space are hidden from your news feed (Home, Friends, Communities, new stories, and similar). You can still visit profiles and use chat.

  1. Choose Mute user or Mute community from one of:
    • The post menu (⋯) on a feed or post detail
    • The space menu (⋯) on a user or community space
  2. Read the confirmation dialog and choose Mute.
  3. After muting, posts to that space no longer appear in your news feed.
  1. Open SettingsSecurity & privacy.
  2. Open Mute management to see your list.
  3. Choose Unmute for the entry you want and confirm.
  4. After unmuting, those posts can appear in your news feed again.
